Are you a student or faculty member at Smith College? If so, you have the opportunity to install Microsoft Office 365 Apps for enterprise on your personal computers and devices. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the process, providing valuable information and troubleshooting tips along the way.
Who is Eligible?
Smith students, faculty, and staff, whether part-time or full-time, can enjoy the benefits of Office 365. However, please note that temporary employees, limited-term employees, auditing students, and non-enrolled individuals are not eligible. To access this service, you’ll need an @smith.edu email account.
Your Office 365 account will remain active as long as you are a current student or employee. To ensure continuous access, be sure to launch at least one Office application each month while connected to the internet. However, upon the expiration of your Smith account, you’ll have the opportunity to purchase an Office 365 license directly from Microsoft.
While you can save personal files in OneDrive, please be aware that Smith College does not support the use of OneDrive for storing college-owned data. As a Google institution, Smith College encourages the use of Google Drive for storage purposes. For further information on data security, please refer to the Smith College Information Security Program page.
To access Office 365, simply use your Smith email address and Smith password as your account credentials. It’s important to remember that your password changes whenever you update your Smith network password.

- Head over to the Office.com page and log in with your Smith email and Smith password.
- Once you’re logged in, click on the “Install Office” option located at the top right corner. You will be presented with two choices: “Office 365 apps” and “Other install options.” In case you only see “Other install options,” don’t worry. We’ll cover troubleshooting steps to resolve this shortly.
Choose the “Office 365 apps” option to start the download of the software installer. By default, the installer will be saved in your Downloads folder. Double-click on the installer to initiate the installation process.
Once the installation is complete, you will find the Office applications in your Applications folder (Mac) or Start menu (Windows).
To verify that you’re logged in with your Smith account, open any Office application such as Word or Excel. On a Mac, your name and initials will be displayed on the top left, while on Windows, your name will appear on the top right.

- Go to the Microsoft Office sign-up page and enter your Smith email address. Then, click on “Get started.”
- Choose the appropriate option based on your role (faculty, staff, or student).
On the next page, select “Sign in” when prompted that you already have an account.
Enter your Smith password on the sign-in page. Remember to authenticate with Duo to complete the login process. Once signed in, click on the “Install Office” dropdown option to check if “Office 365 apps” is available.
