Is South Park on Amazon Prime? What is South Park About? Grab yourself some medicinal fried chicken and slather it in a healthy dollop of crème fraîche, because Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s iconic satirical animation South Park is finally coming to Netflix – but with a slight catch.
The streaming service recently announced that from September 27, subscribers in the UK will be able to watch season 1 and seasons 18 to 21, as well as “a collection of ~top episodes~ which includes critically acclaimed episodes, fan favourites, and others chosen by the creators”.
Those with a keen eye and razor-sharp intellect, however, will notice that Netflix is only offering a total of four whole seasons, something its rival Amazon Prime Video was quick to mock with a Professor Chaos-style laugh.
Boasting 21 seasons of Cartman and the gang’s foul-mouthed antics, Amazon couldn’t resist trolling Netflix over its short supply.
Replying to Netflix’s original announcement on Twitter, Amazon Prime Video UK’s official account posted a picture of a crying Cartman with the caption “when you’ve got four seasons of South Park”, alongside one of the character smiling captioned “when you’ve got 21 seasons of South Park”.
Is South Park on Amazon Prime?
South Park is set to move exclusively to streaming service Paramount+ globally in the next few years, it has been confirmed.
The long-running animation has been available on the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime in the UK, as well as HBO Max in the US.
Amid a spate of announcements regarding Paramount+, it has been confirmed that South Park will start moving exclusively there internationally later in 2022 with the full TV series, before new episodes for season 27 begin exclusively there in 2024.
Following from that, by 2025 all episodes will stream exclusively on the service in the US too – thus the whole catalogue including episodes, movies and direct-to-streaming movies will be on the service around the world. The deal includes the 14 new South Park movies made from streaming over the next few years.
Paramount has also confirmed that the Beavis and Butt-Head revival series will move from Comedy Central to Paramount+ alongside movie Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe, as well as the full back catalogue of episodes too.
“South Park and Beavis and Butt-Head are two of the most successful and widely known adult animation IP in the history of the genre, and I am thrilled that Paramount+ will be their exclusive new SVOD home,” said Paramount+’s chief content officer, unscripted entertainment and adult animation Chris McCarthy.
“By expanding the universe of these franchises, we are unlocking significant value within ViacomCBS’ treasure chest of IP, and this is just the beginning.”
It comes after South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone inked a deal worth a reported $900 million last year, which included the 14 movies and six more seasons of the show.
South Park airs on Comedy Central. It’s also available via streaming services including Amazon Prime Video and NOW in the UK, with selected episodes on Netflix. In the US, it’s also available on HBO Max.
South Park comes to Amazon Prime
South Park has landed on Amazon Prime.
The streaming service is offering the first 21 seasons – which is all of them up to the end of 2017 – to subscribes from today.
The announcement comes despite the animated comedy taking aim at the working conditions of staff in Amazon’s warehouses – and portraying billionaire owner Jeff Bezos as a villainous and murderous alien.
Workers are shown as drones with one run over and mangled by sorting machines, which the company blamed on ‘human error’ – prompting an angry strike with battles on the picketline.
The episodes that covered Amazon – Unfulfilled and Bike Parade – came at the end of season 22, the only one not available on Prime. However, Amazon is still selling the episodes criticising it for £2.49 apiece.
Netflix tried to take the wind out of their rivals’ sails by announcing the show would also be available on its platform.
But the platform will offer only a peculiar selection of episodes to viewers in the UK and Ireland, and not until September 23
The company admitted: ‘Content licensing is a strange and wonderful world.’
Netflix will have the original 1997 series and seasons 18 to 21; plus a ‘collection of top episodes which includes critically acclaimed episodes, fan favourites and others chosen by the creators’ Trey Parker and Matt Stone.
The company added on Twitter: ‘We’ll give you more details about the Top Episodes closer to the time, but there’s plenty!’
But it seems a sketchy offering compared to the comprehensive back catalogue available to Amazon Prime subscribers here.
Where to stream South Park online around the world
Wondering where to stream South Park online? We’ve got you covered with everything you need to watch everyone’s favorite foul-mouthed eight-year-olds wreak havoc and learn some lessons in the cold mountain town in Colorado.
There is a rather staggering 24 seasons of South Park to watch online now, with a slew of new, wacky characters joining the later episodes as well as cartoonized cameos from ‘poorly voiced celebrities’ who, despite being based on real people, are entirely fictional. Of course.
Season 24 has kicked off now with a pair of double-length episodes. First the Pandemic Special and more recently a Vaccine Special. We’ll show you how to get them too.
What is South Park About?
As we mentioned, ‘South Park’ follows the exploits of four boys – Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman and Kenny McCormick. The boys live in a fictional small town called South Park, which is located in the real South Park Basin in the Rocky Mountains in central Colorado. The characters include students, families, elementary school staff, and other residents who all agree that South Park is a quiet place to live in.
Some of the prominent settings that we get to see in ‘South Park’ include the local elementary school, the bus stop, neighborhoods that have the snowy landscape as a backdrop and actual Colorado landmarks. Obviously, the shops and businesses in the fictional town also make an appearance, but they are all based on similar locations seen in Fairplay, Colorado.
Coming to the characters, Stan is shown to be the everyman character in the group. He is an average fourth grader while Kyle is the lone Jew in the group. His portrayal as a Jew is often shown as a satire. The characters of Stan and Kyle are modeled after the creators of ‘South Park’, Trey Parker and Matt Stone.
The characters are best friends, which is a reflection of Parker and Stone’s friendship. This friendship becomes a talking point in many of the episodes. Eric Cartman, who is usually referred to by his nickname, is a loud and obnoxious individual. Often portrayed as the antagonist, he is amoral as well.
He has an anti-semitic attitude which puts him at odds with Kyle, though their enmity runs deeper since Kyle has a strong sense of morals which Cartman absolutely lacks. Kenny is the final member of the group who comes from a poor background, and his parka muffles his voice. The character was eventually written out of the show by the creators.
As for the occurrences in ‘South Park’, the plot-lines are guided by events which take place – and they can be supernatural or extraordinary. Usually, the boys end up playing the voice of reason as the adults begin to act in a panicked manner.
Mostly, the adults are shown to be gullible and irrational. In fact, the parents of the boys are rather hypocritical and contradictory. The boys are of the opinion that the adults have distorted views of morality and society, which becomes the show’s punchline very often. Now, without further ado, let us tell you where to watch ‘South Park’.
