When will elvis be streaming on Amazon Prime? What is this?

When will elvis be streaming on Amazon Prime? Are you used to your weekends not having a whole lotta shaking going on? That’s about to change. The movie we’ve all been waiting for, Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, is finally streaming on platforms like Amazon Prime Video.

And while Elvis is the American icon we love to fawn over, if you’re more of an Anglophile, HBO’s The Princess, a documentary about Princess Diana, is also available to watch this weekend. And of course, if you’re a Mindy Kaling-phile, the third season of Never Have I Ever premieres on Netflix today, too. Whether you want a new movie, or new seasons of your favorite shows, let us here at Decider help you figure out what to watch this weekend and where to stream it.

When will elvis be streaming on Amazon Prime?

Elvis is an icon of American pop culture, but it’s taken an Australian filmmaker to add the necessary glitz to turn his life story and his relationship with Colonel Tom Parker into a complete spectacle. There’s nothing subtle about any aspect of Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, the biopic starring Austin Butler in the title role, and that’s the point.

Though HBO’s The Princess is not a biopic by definition, it’s a thoroughly researched, in-depth record of Princess Diana’s life that’s as riveting as it is devastating, and it’s out just in time for the 25th (!) anniversary of her death.

New on Amazon Prime Video August 9: Elvis

A little less conversation, a little more focus on what’s playing right this minute on demand, please. Much has been made about Austin Butler’s star-making performance as Elvis Aaron Presley in the Baz Luhrmann biopic of the original rock and roll icon, and now that the film is widely available on demand, you can see it for yourself.

Luhrmann’s style is glitzy, overstated and oversaturated, as was Elvis’s, and the film is a boisterous celebration of the musician’s life combined with the darker side of his rise to fame, fueled by his con man manager Colonel Tom Parker, portrayed by Tom Hanks, who relishes playing a villain for once.

New on Netflix August 12: Never Have I Ever (Season 3)

We haven’t gotten a new episode of Never Have I Ever for a year now, and it’s been hard waiting that long to find out what’s new with Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan), Ben (Jaren Lewison), and Paxton (Darren Barnet), not to mention how Aneesa (Megan Suri) fits into the show’s love triangle (er, is it a quadrangle now that Aneesa’s involved?). Netflix will be premiering ten new episodes of Never Have I Ever on Friday so we can catch up with Devi and Co. (and not to worry, there’s still going to be one more season after this one, too!).

Where to Watch Oscar-Nominated Film ‘Elvis’ Starring Austin Butler Online

The 2023 Oscar nominations are in, and this year there are 10 films up for best picture — including Elvis, the biographical drama about the life, rise to fame, and death of the King of Rock and Roll. Austin Butler just bagged a BAFTA for his turn as Elvis Presley and you can catch his performance ahead of the Academy Awards on March 12. Written and directed by Baz Luhrmann, Elvis is available to watch at home on HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.

Austin Butler won his first-ever Golden Globe during this year’s 80th annual awards for his portrayal of the rock & roll legend. “He was somebody who was so true to himself. It liberated a lot of people, even just audiences watching him,” Butler said of Elvis. “I know that was my experience playing him, it freed me in many ways. I’m very shy, so it forced me to get things out of me.”

The film first made a splash in May 2022 at the Cannes Film Festival, where the cast celebrated the world premiere with the real-life Priscilla Presley. Since then, the Presley family has not stopped raving about the film’s portrayal of their late relative’s life and rise to stardom.

Celebrating Elvis’ legacy with a hand and footprint ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, Priscilla joined her and Elvis’ daughter, Lisa-Marie, and granddaughter, Riley Keough.

“It means a lot, absolutely, to my family and the people who knew Elvis really, really well, to be honored in this way,” Priscilla told ET, adding that the theater — then known as the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre — was one of the first sights she saw with Elvis when she first came to Los Angeles in 1962. Both Lisa-Marie and Riley echoed Priscilla’s enthusiasm, saying Butler deserves an Oscar for his portrayal.

Elvis movie is not coming to Prime Video

There is some bad news for those looking forward to watching it on Prime Video. This isn’t a movie heading to Prime Video for free with your Prime membership.

Instead, the movie is heading to HBO Max first. This movie is a Warner Bros. one, and all Warner Bros. movies in 2022 are heading to theaters for 45 days exclusively and will then be available to stream on HBO Max. This isn’t a streamer available via Amazon Channels.

Watch Elvis on Amazon Video

There is a bit of good news, though. This is a movie that will eventually get a Digital release. That means you’ll be able to watch it on Amazon Instant Video.

You’ll need to pay for the movie. It is a one-off charge, and it will be added to your Amazon Library for the rest of the time being. It’s a great way to avoid the streamers as much as possible, and we’re looking at about the same time the movie will head to HBO Max as it heads to Digital. The DVD and Blu-ray release will take longer.
