How much is Amazon Kids Plus? What is Amazon Kids Plus? Subscribers to Amazon’s Kids+ multiplatform package have been notified about a price change, which will become effective on July 14. According to the email sent by Amazon, the company is simplifying the pricing structure and will be converting all Prime members to a $4.99 monthly tier and all non-Prime subscribers to the $7.99 option. In addition, all users will get unlimited access to the service for up to four child profiles.

This is the first time Amazon has changed the pricing since it launched Amazon FreeTime in 2012 (rebranded to Amazon Kids and Kids+ in 2020). With the change, some consumers will see a rise in subscription costs, and for others, rates will drop. Thus, the news is a bit of a mixed bag depending on how each individual customer subscribes.

For Amazon Prime subscribers, Amazon Kids+ costs $4.99 per month. If you’re not a Prime member, you pay $7.99 per month. An annual subscription costs $48.

What is Amazon Kids Plus?

In a nutshell, Amazon Kids Plus is a child-friendly library of apps, books and games that’s positioned as a way to deliver content for kids without parents needing to worry about spending more on individual purchases.

The service works on a wide range of Amazon devices including Fire tablets, Kindles, Fire TV sticks, Echo devices, on Chromebooks, and other Android or iOS tablets or phones. It includes a safe web browser that is ideal for using the internet for research while blocking mature content and social media. It’s also possible to block access to the browser completely if you want to.

How does Amazon Kids Plus work?

So, how do you keep this under control? This kid-friendly entertainment hub is all controlled through the “Amazon Parent Dashboard”. This is where parents manage profiles (for up to four kids), and check on the books and videos that children can access.

In addition to monitoring activity, it’s also where parents can set time limits, send over content from their own personal library, adjust age filter settings, or “pause” a device entirely. Made with kids aged 3-12 in mind, the content available through Kids Plus is sorted into three tiers: for children aged 3-6, aged 6-8 and 9-12, and it includes material from Disney, Lego and Warner Bros (more on that below).

What is available on Amazon Kids Plus?

For children, using Kids Plus is an ad-free experience that gives them access to thousands of books, audiobooks, educational apps, movies, shows and games. The profile that has been set up by a parent is what the child will use to log in on compatible devices.

Kids in the youngest tier will find TV series like Paw Patrol, Thomas & Friends and Peppa Pig, while kids between 6-8 will be able to watch Shrek films and Lego shows, along with Disney games and Mr Men, Harry Potter and Guinness World Records books.

Those browsing in the tier for those aged between 9 and 12 will find more Amazon Original shows including Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny and Just Add Magic, as well as Nickelodeon shows like Victorious and books such as Lemony Snickett’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, David Walliams’ Gangsta Granny and The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot, all included within the monthly price.

It’s also worth noting that children can’t exit Kids Plus without a PIN set by their parents and managed through the Parent Dashboard. You’ll want to take note of what this PIN is after you’ve set it.

Is Amazon Kids Plus included with Prime?

Kids Plus isn’t included with Prime for free. However, being a Prime member will reduce the price of the subscription. You’ll find that it’s £3.99 a month rather than £6.99 a month, or £38 a year.

Should I Subscribe to Amazon Kids Plus?

The Kids plus is a great investment if you need to keep your kids busy with fun and educational content. It cuts across movies, books, and games so it’s more of a 3-in-1 deal. Since you can control what they engage with on this service, you don’t have to worry about any weird ads or mature content.

To get the full value, we recommend purchasing an Amazon Fire Kids Tablet so you can enjoy one year free before committing to a subscription plan. It’s also worth the price – especially if you’re already on an Amazon Prime subscription.

How to sign up to Amazon Kids+

Amazon makes it easy to sign up to Amazon Kids+, and there are discounts available if you are already a member of its Prime subscription service. Some plans even come with a free trial, with the charges not starting until that has expired.

These are the Amazon Kids+ plans currently available:

Monthly plan: Amazon describes this as its most popular plan. It costs £3.99 per month if you’re a Prime member and £6.99 per month if you’re not. This plan includes a one-month free trial.

Sign up to Amazon Prime for £8.99 a month or start a 30-day free trial.

One year plan: A full year of Kids+ costs £38 for Prime members and £68 for non-Prime members. It gives you unlimited access for up to four children. There’s no free trial included.

Any customers who already subscribe to Amazon Kids+ on their Fire Kids Tablets or compatible devices will be able to upgrade to Amazon Kids+ on Alexa for free.

Is Amazon Kids+ Worth It?

Honestly, it depends. I think it’s worth it if your kids want access to more than just books. If they have a Fire tablet and play games, they may like the extra access, and it’s less expensive for you at $7.99 and $4.99 for Prime members.

Amazon Kids+ has a nice selection of kids’ books, but I think it’s more limited than Kindle Unlimited (more about Kindle Unlimited), and I hate that there’s no page where you can see all the books in the Amazon Kids+ library like you can with Kindle Unlimited. I also hate their Parent Dashboard — it’s clunky and the search function is horrid.

So if your kids are mostly readers with the Kindle e-readers, you might want to try out Kindle Unlimited instead and see if you prefer their selection of books. Although it’s pricier at $11.99, it also has books for adults, which Amazon Kids+ doesn’t.

For families who tear through audiobooks more than anything else, try Scribd (this link gives you two free months) or Libro.fm. And, of course, if you have access to a good one, the library also works well with Kindle e-readers (see how to add Libby books to Kindle).
